Thank you for your critique of Death Notes. The ambiguity you highlighted *completely* missed me -- thank you for spotting it and being so kind as to tell me. I'll correct the text immediately.
As for how the two met up, that is a really interesting question. I saw it all happening in a louche kind of way... someone beautiful but insecure made a couple of wrong choices for friends, then arcing around in the sort of big circles that people who are sociable but vulnerable do... whole other story, really, beyond a flash fiction piece (I couldn't sleep so banged one out) but there would -- you're right -- be a very interesting tale there.
I think I need to interview more young beautiful women to find out how this sort of thing happens!
