This blank page houses eternity
It offers a million opportunities
Endless information can make its home
on this pristine page

The beginning of
the next great American novel
The close of a brilliant script
A note between lovers
An accord between powerful men
This blank page must look on the world
with unbridled optimism
as it surveys the possibilities

But soon, there are no possibilities
Most are lost
to things surely less beautiful
than love and power
and inspiration
Most are lost to children’s creations
To fourth grade spelling tests
To writers block

I hope that I have offered
My blank page
A more fitting death
than a fourth grader
who misspells
merder…

Discussion

This is something that I can really be able to relate to! I loved My blank page becuase it reminds us of a writer who wants to write about something, but stares down on his blank page. Maybe you ought to make a short story out of this, the story should be about a kid novelist wants to become a novelist, but wants ideas how and overcomes the negative reception that he gets from others who don't and cannot believe that the kid novelist will succeed in his ambitious dreams to becoming a novelist. Take care, contact me on my scratchpad if you want to reply on my idea just by clicking my name! Also, when you said "I hope I have offered a more fitting death for my blank page, than a fourth grader who mispells merder" you should say "Than a fourth grader who mispells murder like merder" just so readers on scribophile understand that the poet/ author (That would be you) meant to give an example of a fourth grader mispelling murder rather than the poet or author mispelling the work. Tell me wha you think of my ideas for this and the short story ideas okay?

I loved it! What an ending"merder", that's funny. You have a good talent. I felt like the page was sitting crossed legged with his elbow on his knee sitting waiting to be used "properly". I am so glad to be here reading all these great masterpieces. My favorite lines are "This blank page houses eternity" "It offers a million opportunities". Loved that opening it really grabbed ( but I still love the ending, "merder"). Well, look forward to finding some more of your good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

I enjoyed the concept, even if it's been done. You put a fresh spin on it, and you have a knack for vocabulary.

I didn't enjoy the ending or the 'wasted on fourth grade' point. It didn't do much for me. And what do you mean exactly in the first line 'This black page houses eternity'? Seems like a bunch of fluff.

Thank you guys, I really appreciate the kind words and the criticisms.  Let me take a few lines to explain the concerns that have been expressed.  The mixed reviews on the ending are somewhat understandable.  I like the ending because it adds a little lightness, or so I think, it might be a little goofy for the rest of the poem but I like the little twist at the end.  I am open to suggestions for improvements though.  Also the reason I put houses eternity is because I am trying to communicate the limitless possibilities of a blank page, so I thought about the most immense things I could have (eternity and the universe) and that is the line that I came up with... I simply tried to create as large an image as I could and apply to "my blank page".  I think it fits well, but again, if you have suggestions for improvement I am all ears.

I found myself nodding all the way through...very relatable.  And then the ending made me smile instantly.  It was a clever way to connect the previous stanza ("the fourth grade spelling tests") with the idea of the death of the blank page.

I liked the line about "housing eternity."  However, I did notice that the first stanza seems slightly redundant.  The first three lines essentially say the same thing.

Nice job, though.  I hope to read more of your poetry.

I hope that I have offered My blank page A more fitting death than a fourth grader who misspells merder…

but in the death of a blank page a story has been born

what if shakespere was afriad to kill a blank page? or homer?

or for those who dont know those two, j.k. rowling, j,r,r tolkin, and dan brown?

there would be no storys of love, hate, death, destruction, fear, and possesion from any of these people

so i say do not fear the death but rejoyce in the birth
