Laurie,

hmm was you post sarcastic...? Hard to tell. Just curious...
Laurie:

If you don't like longer works, skip Viral Evolution. I'll have more coming. Wait until I get a chance to review one of yours first. I'm working on a story that loosely fits the challenge theme. I might post that one by the end of the month.
Laurie:

The one I posted needs a lot of work...fair warning. The ideas may be too big for a short. I know there's too much dialogue and too little action. I have formed an unhealthy attachment to the draft that is in place, however, and I just need to get in and cut ruthlessly. I guess I just wanted to forwarn you that, at this point, it's not my best work.
*Both types of critters. (Ugh. I need an editor )
Yes, they do, you're right. I was just thrown because the first definition I got referred specifically to vertebrates. Types of critters have them, but in bugs they're those prong-y pincher things and for us its just the jawbone. Don't change a word!
Aha! Now that explains it all. That WAS my first inclination, but I really the choice of the word "mandible" is what threw me. I had to look it up and wiki takes you straight to "vertebrate jawbone" so I thought it was specifically NOT referring to insects. Insufficient research was the culprit of misinterpretation there
Thank you SOO much for the crit on Over My Shoulder!! I'm so glad it could bring back memories. I can only hope to keep that going! I plan to post Ch. 2 tomorrow.
Thank you SO much for the niceties! I really appreciate your encouragement! I really need to poish up that story and your commetns make me want to start immedietly! Have a really great week!

About Laurie

Occupation: Oh, jeez. I've been around. Right now, I'm working part time in a retro 50's lunch counter and taking a couple of classes. I'm applying to the university MFA program--wish me luck! I'm following my gut. :D Living the dream!!

About Me: I've always been a writer at heart. My fondest wish is to someday make my living through writing--novels, hopefully. So far, I've been writing mostly short stories.
I love both genre and literary writing, and hope to someday successfully blend the two, incorporating my own dark and/or weird flavors.
Interests: Geeky stuff, but not the kind that requires thinking.
Astrophysics? Nope.
Video games? Oh, yeah.
I also have dogs (2) and a cat, and my husband and I treat them like they're our kids, if our kids ate off the floor and pooped in the yard.

Favorite Movies: 'Dog Soldiers', 'Ginger Snaps', 'Children Of Men', anything by Brad Bird and/or Pixar, 'Stranger Than Fiction', 'American Beauty', 'Waitress', 'Juno', 'To Kill a Mockingbird', 'Black Sheep' , 'Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day'. . . this list rotates to follow my mood, so check back.
Favorite TV Shows: Top Chef, Glee, SYTYCD, cheesy Sci Fi Channel/Chiller TV movies, anything Joss Whedon, Wonderfalls, House, old Warner Brothers cartoons.
Favorite Quotes: "We live in a culture that discourages empathy. A culture that too often tells us our principle goal in life is to be rich, thin, young, famous, safe, and entertained."
--Barack Obama, speech, Jul. 12, 2006

"Rats and roaches live by competition under the laws of supply and demand; it is the privilege of human beings to live under the laws of justice and mercy."
--Wendell Berry

“I don't know which is more discouraging, literature or chickens.”
--E. B. White

Loves: I love family (made and found), dark films, all kinds of books and music (still haven't figured out the appeal of tejano, tho), warm clothes from the dryer, compassion, surprises, public adoration and chocolate-pecan pie a la mode.
Hates: Closed-minded thinking, petty character judgments, excessive greed/selfishness, idiotic cell phone usage, incivility and black licorice. Ew.
