Laurie, to answer your question, yes–if you critique a work that’s not in the queue, including works in circles that haven’t been on the queue or have already been on the queue, then you’ll receive fewer karma points. But you’ll still receive SOME karma points–in fact, the same amount that you’ve been receiving since we started awarding karma per word.
We think that this is a good middle ground between allowing people to critique whatever they want and yet emphasizing the review queue as the place to look to first. Again, we’ll be keeping an eye on things, so you can expect more tweaks in the future.

ooh, intriguing. my only kneejerk question is this: a few of the circles focus on weekly posting and reviewing of new short stories–if these stories haven’t yet made it on the official queue, we’ll kinda be left out a bit, yes? as far as karma goes? (and yes, i realize the irony in worrying about being compensated properly for karma. :D)
perhaps i’m mistaken and someone will correct my thinking on this.
