Publishing Cost Changes

Not too long ago we changed the karma system to reward longer critiques by the word.  We promised to keep an eye on how the new numbers were working out to make sure that you’d still getting great critiques.  In that spirit, we’ve upped the amount of karma it takes to publish a work, from 3 points to 5.  It’s a big jump, but when you factor in the karma you can earn from writing longer critiques, we think it’s fair.

We want to make sure your works get read, and ensuring that means keeping a balance between how much gets published versus how much it takes to publish.  Hopefully, with this change, we’ll be a little closer to keeping the balance!

As always, let us know what you think in the comments or in the forums.  We’re listening!

wow! that is a big jump! i have noticed the larger karma rewards, though, for my critiques. and if there're fewer works being published at a time they might gain more attention. should be interesting. we'll see, eh?
 I like it.  Great thinking.
One concern I have is how this affects the rating of stories/critiques.  It's a feature that I think sometimes gets forgotten, but has been invaluable to me since coming here.  It I can get six points for a critique (which I have) but the bonuses or minuses I get for it being good are still .025 then the need to make them good drops dramatically.  I know that I try my best to write 4 or 5 star critiques, so that I can get that extra karma and not lose any.  If your going to adjust the prices you need to adjust the whole economy.  My $0.02. -Ben
This ensures that critiques are long enough, but what about quality. what if space is just filled with useless words? is there a system that allows reporting of people with bogus critiques? Thanks, Soheil
Soheil, to answer your question, if you feel that a critique is not up to par for whatever reason, you can rate it down by clicking on the stars in the lower right corner.  By rating it low, you'll remove some karma points from the critiquer.  Additionally, we have a small group of moderators who keep an eye on critiques and flag critiques that abuse the system.  We want to make sure you get quality crits!
