Member-Sponsored Crafting a Villanelle Contest
|Deadline:||Sep 15, 2016|
Write a villanelle.
Theme: Your choice.
The villanelle is a 19-line poem constructed of five tercets and a final quatrain, each line written in iambic pentameter. The villanelle turns on two rhymes, as follows: ABA-ABA-ABA-ABA-ABA-ABAA. The first and third lines of the poem repeat alternately as the last lines of the subsequent stanzas. Therefore, Line 1 repeats as Lines 6, 12, and 18, and Line 3 repeats as Lines 9, 15, and 19. All "B" lines rhyme with the end rhyme of Line 2. Notice that Lines 18 and 19 are identical to Lines 1 and 3, forming the final couplet.
For an excellent and well-known example of a villanelle, see "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night", by Dylan Thomas.
