Group-Sponsored Chapter One Contest

Details

Deadline:Mar 30, 2023
Fee:Free

Third Drawer Down invites you to share the beginning of your novel with our judge. Your first chapter's job is to draw in your readers and hold them, making them care about your characters and want to go on an intriguing journey with them.

Our judge is the renowned former news anchor and author Lynne Russell. Her extensive background in investigating and reporting, along with experience writing news and fiction, will aid her in judging. Her goal is to determine if your characters feel real and believable, if your story is compelling, and if what you reveal in that first chapter will entice someone to want to keep reading.

This contest is open to every genre and age group (Middle Grade through adult). However, please do not include stories containing overly graphic violence or erotica. Note— this is a contest for first chapters, not prologues. If your first chapter is longer than 3,000 words, you need to find a good stopping point prior to the end.

Prize money for this contest is provided by the Scribophile Writing Contest Prize Fund.

An Interesting Tidbit

Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick was so unpopular that it was essentially a lost work until 1930, when it was “rediscovered” by a scholar.
