Group-Sponsored Poetic Prose Contest
Details
Deadline: | May 28, 2016 |
Fee: | Free |
Poetic Prose is prose which has some of the defining attributes of poetry. Perhaps it is beautiful to read. Perhaps it is not quite beautiful, and instead its subject matter is exemplified by the careful use of words—so staccato sounds are used to punctuate a fast flurry of action, or onomatopeia brings the slaughterhouse alive around us, or assonance and consonance bring to us the attributes of the world and characters you are writing about. Poetic Prose can be prose which attains a certain sheen of poetry, or it can be prose poetry which is poetry in the form or prose. This contest is for anything at either extreme or in-between. For help and examples please sign up to the group, where you will find discussions on what the term means and examples to peruse: www.scribophile.com/groups/poetic-prose/
Please submit: a self-contained scene, vignette or story of maximum 1,500 words. Please ensure this is new writing (e.g. not an excerpt from a work you've previously written). Aim for whatever you think is poetic: the thoughts of a character, the observations of someone upon the world, an objective narrator's view of behaviour and substance, a stream-of-consciousness swirl of madness, a retelling of a fable or folktale. In fact, anything goes in terms of theme and focus of narrative. In terms of poetry it must look like prose (in paragraph blocks): this is called prose poetry. Please see examples in the group. If you submit poetry in verse form (line breaks) it will not be considered.
