The Psychology Group welcomes you to the Ward: Addictions Contest. We invite you to join us in exploring the various layers of addictions. Below is a list of ten prompts. Select a prompt as your inspiration and begin writing. Submit flash-fiction or short stories of under 3,000 words in length. The title is your choice; however, your selection(s)/prompt(s) must be written in your submission’s “About This Work” section. (multiple prompts can be used).

Addictions:

  1. Substance abuse: recreational or pharmaceutical

  2. The internet (in all its forms, social media, knowledge, pornography, Scribophile, etcetera, etcetera . . .

  3. Work, social status, or materialism

  4. Gaming (Console, PC, Mobile, outdoor, recreational, or professional sports)

  5. Power (Social or professional)

  6. Gambling

  7. Shopping (Oniomania)

  8. Eating (Compulsive, Bulimic, Anorexia, ect).

  9. Hoarding (e.g. books!)

  10. Body Modifications (tattoos, piercings, branding, plastic surgery, etcetera, etcetera . . .)

Prize money for this contest is provided by the Scribophile Writing Contest Prize Fund.

Rules

  • Entries must be received before June 30th, 2020, 11:59 PM, UTC.

  • Winners will be announce by (or before) August 1st, 2020.

  • Short stories/flash-fiction only. Chapters, screenplays, and poetry will not be considered.

  • Your selection(s)/prompt(s) must be written in your submission’s “About This Work” section.

  • Entries must be 3,000 words or less by Scribophile’s count.

  • Only one entry per member, please. Multiple entries will all be disqualified.

  • Entrants may not submit an entry that has already placed in a previous Scribophile contest or is currently in another Scribophile contest.

  • Work must have Public visibility on Scribophile until winners are announced.

  • Entries will be judged by a three judge panel. Decisions are final.

Submission guidelines

  • To enter the contest, post your work to Scribophile and check the box that says “Enter this work into the Group-Sponsored The Ward: Addictions Contest”. Your work will automatically be considered.

  • The checkbox will be visible until the contest deadline, which is in UTC time.

  • Entry is free, but you will need karma points to post your work. You can earn karma points by writing critiques of work by other members.
