Parody (n.): A literary composition modelled on and imitating another work, esp. a composition in which the characteristic style and themes of a particular author or genre are satirized by being applied to inappropriate or unlikely subjects, or are otherwise exaggerated for comic effect.

This month, a lovely group of sponsors would like to read your best parody of a sci-fi series in no more than 2500 words. Think "Galaxy Quest" for this challenge (or "Spaceballs," a parody of the Star Wars films), poking fun at Star Trek while adhering to a unique storyline. This is not to be confused with fanfiction; you aren't allowed to use the worlds and characters created by another person. Instead, you're mocking them, hyperbolizing them, satirizing them. Keep in mind that this is also a comedy contest.

I hesitate to say, "Show me your funny bone" because I'm not entirely certain I want to see it, but embrace the humor of the topic. You've got endless tropes and archetypes to work with, so don't be afraid to really play with them.

Rules

  • Your entry must be a parody of a science fiction series (TV show, books, or video games) totaling 2500 words or fewer as counted by Scribophile.

  • Entries must be received before midnight on December 31st, 2012 (UTC time), and winners will be announced within two weeks of that date.

  • Entries will be judged by a group of volunteer judges. Decisions are final.

  • Only one entry is allowed per member. Multiple entries will all be disqualified.

  • Work must have Public visibility on Scribophile until winners are announced.

Submission guidelines

  • To enter the contest, post your work on Scribophile and check the box that says "Enter this work into the Member-Sponsored Infinity and Beyond Contest". Your work will automatically be considered. The checkbox will be visible until the contest deadline, which is in UTC time.

  • Entry is free, but you'll need karma points to post your work. You can earn karma points by writing critiques of work by other members.

  • If you have placed in a contest in the past with a particular piece, you may not resubmit that piece in other contests.
